Chris Clark gained herself a contract with Motown by strolling into Berry Gordy’s office at Hitsville in 1963 and performing an impromptu version of Etta James R’n’B classic ‘All I Could Do Was Cry’. Gordy was impressed by the statuesque blonde’s vocals and looks, and the fact that the song she performed was co-written by him can’t have done her any harm when he was making his decision.
But like almost everyone else at Motown, Chris had to pay her dues, and this included two years working in the reception at Motown’s offices before she finally cut her first single, ‘Do Right Baby, Do Right’, written and produced by Gordy in 1965 on VIP. As one of a few white female singers to be signed to the company (Debbie Dean being the first) but with a voice sounding distinctly black, she must have been a marketing headache for the fledgling label, and despite having the wonderfully bluesy ‘Don’t Be Too Long’ as its B side (another Gordy production), the 45 bombed.
A little over six months later, in July 1966, her second single ‘Love’s Gone Bad’ teamed her up with the hit-making trio Holland, Dozier and Holland on a funk-laden slab of bluesy soul that became her only chart entry. The flip was a take on the trio’s ‘Put Yourself In My Place’, which was covered by (amongst others) The Isley Brothers, The Elgins and the Supremes.
